CM Says Meghalaya–Bangladesh Border Under Round-the-Clock Surveillance

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday asserted that the state’s international border with Bangladesh is under continuous watch, with security agencies operating at a high level of preparedness. Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that while the responsibility of border management lies with the Centre and the BSF, the state government has taken every possible step to strengthen vigilance and coordination. “All agencies, including the Meghalaya Government and the BSF, are extremely alert,” he said.

The Chief Minister disclosed that an internal security review meeting was convened on December 24, involving senior officials from the BSF, Intelligence Bureau, and other agencies. Due to the sensitive nature of internal security matters, no details were shared publicly, but monitoring has remained uninterrupted since the meeting, he added. Sangma said there is presently no serious threat perception but stressed that constant vigilance remains crucial given the strategic and sensitive nature of the border.

Referring to border fencing, the Chief Minister said most stretches have already been secured, with only 30–40 km yet to be fenced in scattered locations, mainly in West Jaintia Hills and South Garo Hills districts. He said progress had earlier been hampered by land issues, resistance from local communities, and ongoing court cases.

He added that many of these obstacles were resolved during a review held about four months ago, allowing work to gain momentum. The Centre is closely monitoring the project, and the state government remains in regular contact with authorities in New Delhi. “We are moving fast on this issue and expect the remaining work to be completed soon,” Sangma said.
