Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, today attended the Distribution of Appointment Letters programme organised by the Meghalaya Police at the 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre. On his arrival, the Chief Minister was accorded a Guard of Honour, followed by a felicitation ceremony. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister, congratulated the 76 newly appointed Sub-Inspectors and described the occasion as a significant milestone in their lives and careers. He noted that more than 21,000 candidates had applied for the posts, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the recruitment process. Emphasising the trust reposed in the police by the public, the Chief Minister urged the recruits to live up to the expectations of the government, their families, and the people of the State.“Out of more than 21,000 applicants, God has chosen 76 of you to serve Meghalaya,” he said. Highlighting the role of Sub-Inspectors, he described them as the eyes and ears of the police and the government, serving as a vital link between the public and decision-makers. Urging them not to underestimate their role, he stressed their responsibility in ensuring efficient, effective, and people-centric policing.
He reminded the recruits to remain humane in the exercise of authority and cautioned against allowing power or position to influence their conduct. He also urged them to take their forthcoming training seriously, describing it as the foundation of their professional journey. The Chief Minister commended the Director General of Police and the Recruitment Board for conducting the recruitment process in a fair, transparent, and efficient manner despite several challenges. “This is not just about a job; it is about serving the people of Meghalaya and the nation,” he said. Earlier, Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, delivered the welcome address, congratulating the newly appointed officers and their families. She recalled the rigorous recruitment process, which began with the issuance of the advertisement in March 2024. She expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his constant support and acknowledged the guidance of the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), the Chief Secretary, and other senior officials, whose collective efforts ensured the successful completion of the recruitment drive.
Highlighting the strengthening of the Meghalaya Police, she stated that the induction of 76 Sub-Inspectors added to the existing force of over 17,000 personnel. “You are not just joining a fraternity; you are joining a family,” she said. Providing details of the recruitment process, she informed that over 21,000 candidates had applied for the 76 vacancies. She further stated that the recruits would shortly report to the North Eastern Police Academy, with basic training scheduled to commence on January 30. The batch comprises 49 male and 27 female Sub-Inspectors, with women constituting over 35 per cent of the intake. One-third of the officers will be posted in East Khasi Hills, while the remaining will be deployed across 12 other units and districts of the State.
