Meghalaya BJP condemns attempts to disrupt Christmas celebrations, demands strict punishment

Amidst reports of attempts to disrupt Christmas celebrations in parts of the country, the Meghalaya unit of the BJP on Friday demanded the strictest punishment for those involved, asserting that every citizen has the constitutional right to celebrate festivals freely and without fear. State BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said Christmas symbolises love, harmony and unity, and is celebrated across communities in India with equal zeal and reverence. Air pollution may be cutting rainfall in Meghalaya’s wettest region, says study

Mawsynram in Meghalaya is famous across the world for being one of the wettest places on the planet. But new research suggests that the town may be losing some of its record-breaking rain, and air pollution could be one of the main reasons. A recent scientific study has found that the total rainfall recorded in Mawsynram has gone down sharply over the past decade. According to the researchers, the annual rainfall dropped from a little over 10,200 millimetres in 2014 to about 8,800 millimetres in 2023. This means the region has seen a decline of nearly 14 per cent during this period, which experts believe is quite significant for a place known for very heavy rain. The study was published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing. The research team examined satellite-based d...

Air pollution linked to dramatic rainfall decline in Meghalaya’s Mawsynram

Mawsynram in Meghalaya, traditionally known as the wettest place on Earth, has experienced a sharp drop in annual rainfall over the past decade, with researchers linking the decline to rising air pollution levels. A study published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing reveals that annual rainfall in the region plummeted from 10,235 millimetres to 8,838.2 millimetres between 2014 and 2023. The research team, led by Mamta Devi et al., found a strong correlation between this 13.6 per cent decrease and increasing atmospheric aerosol concentrations. Satellite data analysis showed aerosol optical depth—a measure of particle pollution in the atmosphere—rose by nearly 15 per cent during the study period, increasing by approximately 0.007 units annually. Fine-mode aerosol part...

The investigation drew national attention, with the Meghalaya Police arresting multiple accused and filing a detailed charge sheet. Officials described it as among the most resource-intensive probes in recent years, citing extensive financial tracking and interstate coordination with agencies in Madhya Pradesh. The case also fed broader debate on policing capacity in high-visibility investigations. Politics saw a clear realign...
