The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Meghalaya has sought additional time to complete its probe into the multi-crore road construction scam involving the Shillong-Nongstoin-Rongjeng-Tura highway. The investigation, which was initially expected to be concluded, has been delayed due to the complexity of the case. The probe was initiated following an order from Meghalaya's Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang, after allegations surfaced about large-scale misappropriation of funds meant for the crucial road project. Union Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will arrive in Shillong on February 27 for a day’s visit. The Union Finance Minister, during her visit, will lay the foundation stone of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Integrated Complex at Umsawli, New Shillong Township. The Union minister is also expected to hold a post-Budget interaction with the industry players, Chartered Accountants, Tax Consultants, et al, in the city on the same day.

Negotiations are reportedly moving forward briskly, and the land acquisition procedure for Shillong Airport's expansion has proceeded to a new stage. A detailed survey conducted at the airport revealed that an additional 16-17 acres of land would be required to facilitate the expansion. The proposed expansion aims to enable the operation of larger aircraft, thus improving air connectivity in Meghalaya. Sources confirmed that the Transport department is the primary agency handling the land acquisition proceedings. “Most of the villagers in the area concerned are on board with the acquisition process. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirmed the state’s commitment to deepening ties with Japan, leveraging India’s strong bilateral relations with the country. Speaking at the 5th India-Japan Conclave in Guwahati, Sangma highlighted Meghalaya’s initiatives to create employment and skill development opportunities for youth in Japan. The milestone is expected to enhance logistics and strengthen the transportation network in the region. Hinting at a storm of irregularities that is brewing in licensing of wine stores in the region, RTI activist Disparsing Rani has accused authorities of allowing illegal wine store operations by bypassing established protocols and, in some cases, resorting to forgery to secure mandatory clearances. Every wine store in the area is required to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the local headman, along with strict adherence to guidelines concerning the distance of these establishments from schools and other sensitive areas. “Any wine store must obtain an NOC and follow the designated safety protocols.
