IOA confirms Meghalaya as host of 39th National Games in 2027

Meghalaya has officially been confirmed as the host for the 39th National Games in 2027. Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on Sunday announced that both the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the central government have accepted Meghalaya’s request to host the Games. As per officials, while Shillong will be the main host city for the 39th National Games, Tura and Jowai will also host various sporting disciplines during the event. The state has been upgrading its sports facilities, including the JN Sports Complex in Shillong, Wahiajer Stadium in Jaintia Hills, and the PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura.These projects are part of Meghalaya’s initiative to boost sports development across the state.

Negotiations are reportedly moving forward briskly, and the land acquisition procedure for Shillong Airport's expansion has proceeded to a new stage. A detailed survey conducted at the airport revealed that an additional 16-17 acres of land would be required to facilitate the expansion. The proposed expansion aims to enable the operation of larger aircraft, thus improving air connectivity in Meghalaya. Hinting at a storm of irregularities that is brewing in licensing of wine stores in the region, RTI activist Disparsing Rani has accused authorities of allowing illegal wine store operations by bypassing established protocols and, in some cases, resorting to forgery to secure mandatory clearances.
