The fate of as many as 272 candidates will be decided on Friday as over 13 lakh voters started voting in the district council elections on Friday. The counting of votes will take place on February 24. A total number of 158 candidates, including 12 women, are contesting in the KHADC polls while 114 candidates including 12 women candidates will fight it out in the JHADC election. The urban areas in Khasi and Jaintia Hills saw low-key campaigning as compared to the rural pockets. There are 1,669 polling stations in the KHADC with around 110 being tagged as sensitive. Ninety-five of the 477 polling stations in the JHADC have been declared as sensitive. East Khasi Hills District Magistrate RM Kurbah under Section 163 BNSS has prohibited any sort of agitational programmes of any form, by any individual or organisation on East Khasi Hills district in view of the Khasi Hills Autonomous  District Council (KHADC) election scheduled for February 21. In a notice issued by the DM's office, Kurbah said the information has been received about some organisations were holding agitational programmes like hunger strike, procession, rally in the district and such programmes if held will likely create law and order problem, breach peace and tranquility thereby affecting the smooth conduct of KhADC election if nor prohibited immediately. East Khasi Hills Police arrested one person for allegedly threatening to plant multiple bombs across Shillong city.The person identified as 37-year-Edward Maiong was arrested from his temporary residence at Lower New Colony Laitumkhrah following an FIR registered against him, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters. He said the FIR filed on Wednesday informed that the complainant had received an SMS message over phone from an unknown number threatening to plant multiple bombs within Shillong city. The sender of the message had identified himself as being a part of 'Ri-Bhoi gang'. On receiving the FIR, a case was registered vide Sadar P.S Case No.29(01)2025 u/s 351(4)/353(2)/61(2) and 113(2)(b) BNS Act.
