SC summons Assam Chief Secretary over unpaid tea worker dues

The Supreme Court has rounded up Assam Chief Secretary issuing a notice to the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry over continued delay in payments to tea garden workers of the state. The court has asked the Chief Secretary of Assam to appear before court on November 14, 2024. The Court orders, "We direct the Chief Secretary of State of Assam to personally remain present in the Court on the next date, i.e., 14th November 2024. The state will have to seriously answer the question why there is no sincere effort made to pay the dues of the workmen who have worked in tea estates owned by the state of Assam." However, the Assam Government has responded to the order saying that the state is dealing with dues of poor workmen & financial losses.

SC upholds validity of Section 6A of Citizenship Act of immigrants from Bangladesh

According to Section 6A of Citizenship Act, immigrants who entered Assam between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971 are to be identified as Indian citizens. Supreme Court on Thursday, has upheld the decision to extend validity of the Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam due to complex situation during that period as Assam Accord's cut off date, declaring it unconstitutional. A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has delivered the majority verdict. The Chief Justice has emphasized the current impact of the immigrants in Assam's geography, also expressing concerns about ethnic diversity as a basis for violating Article 29(1) of the Constitution, which protects the rights of minorities.

Assam government plans to invest in wetlands to control flood, erosion

129 beels also known as wetlands have been identified for the purpose of rejuvenating in Assam. As wetlands play a vital role in fish production, ground water recharge, control erosion, river water flow and more. However, ignorance of wetlands have decreased fish production over the years. Assam Government and Asian Development Bank (ADB) has decided to invest in wetlands of rupees 796.88 crore. Officials stated, "Desilting of marginal area for increase water holding capacity of the beels, de-weeding as per requirement, construction of site-specific water pools and water retaining structure in beels for sustainable water storage and thereby enhancing fish production, besides contributing to flood mitigation are other components of the project."
