Assault on NEHU Registrar Raises Serious Law and Order Concerns in Meghalaya

The recent assault on North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Registrar Kailash Chandra Biswal by masked miscreants near Mawlai Bypass has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the law and order situation in Meghalaya.
Leader of the Opposition Mukul M. Sangma expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that such acts of violence threaten public safety and damage the state’s reputation as a peaceful destination. He emphasized that maintaining safety, security, and tranquility is crucial for Meghalaya’s overall development, particularly in sectors like tourism and hospitality.
Sangma warned that repeated incidents without strict action can embolden criminals and questioned the government’s effectiveness in ensuring peace. He also highlighted the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, describing it as a strong framework that must be properly enforced to ensure a secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party also condemned the attack, calling it disturbing and unacceptable in a civilized society. Party general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna stated that violence against academic officials undermines the sanctity of universities, which should remain spaces for learning, dialogue, and progress rather than intimidation.
Meanwhile, the academic community at NEHU’s Tura campus—including students, teachers, and faculty—strongly denounced the assault on Prof. Biswal, who serves as registrar-in-charge and teaches in the Department of Management. In a joint statement, they said such violence contradicts the fundamental values of respect, safety, and dignity upheld by educational institutions.
The fraternity urged authorities to take immediate and serious action against those responsible and to implement measures ensuring the safety of academic staff, stressing that campuses must remain free from fear, intimidation, and harm.
