NITI Aayog report ranks Arunachal first in fiscal performance for 2023–24
Arunachal Pradesh has secured the top position among North Eastern and Himalayan states in the Fiscal Health Index (FHI) for the financial year 2023–24, according to a report released by NITI Aayog.
The think tank released the 2026 Fiscal Health Index report in New Delhi on Wednesday. The report was unveiled by Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog.
The Fiscal Health Index is a framework developed to assess and compare the financial performance of states. It highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each state’s fiscal management and provides an overall picture of their financial health.
According to the report, the index evaluates states based on five key pillars: quality of expenditure, revenue mobilisation, fiscal prudence, debt index and debt sustainability. These parameters help measure how effectively states manage public finances and utilise resources.
The second edition of the index has expanded its coverage to include 18 major states and 10 North Eastern and Himalayan states, including Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Uttarakhand.
Reacting to the achievement, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated the people of the state and said the recognition reflects the government’s commitment to responsible financial management.
He said the state has improved its revenue generation and ensured better use of public funds. Among the North Eastern and Himalayan states, Arunachal Pradesh ranked first in the index, followed by Uttarakhand and Tripura.
The chief minister added that the recognition would motivate the government to further strengthen fiscal transparency and improve the quality of public spending.
According to Khandu, the government will continue focusing on sustainable development and efficient financial management to ensure better services and long-term growth for the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
