Anjel Chakma Murder Sparks CoMSO Demand for Anti-Racism Law

The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has advocated for the establishment of a national anti-racism law and expedited justice following the murder of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura. CoMSO emphasizes that this incident exemplifies a troubling trend of racial violence targeting individuals from Northeast India in various cities across the country. In their statement, they conveyed profound condolences and outrage, asserting that such crimes reflect a broader systemic prejudice encountered by Northeastern citizens, particularly in urban areas like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Dehradun. CoMSO is urging the central government to mandate state administrations to implement a dedicated 24/7 ‘North East Helpline’ and to set up specialized police units in major cities to safeguard students and professionals from the region. Additionally, they called for accountability from educational institutions and local governments for their inability to create a safe and inclusive atmosphere for these individuals.
